DuckDuckGo, the well known privacy based search engine has been reported to be blocked in India by multiple ISPs without any reason. It is a great search engine which does not track us unlike Google or any other search engine.
After Banning 59 Chinese apps, yesterday many users around India reported that they cannot access DuckDuckGo search engine and the search engine is US based not Chinese. Either, it will show that host name is not found or that DoT (Department of Telecommunications, Government of India) has given orders to block it which is not true, as Dot has not given any orders.
At First many users thought that it was a problem on DuckDuckGo side. But many users checked and told that it is blocked by ISPs and not by DuckDuckGo themselves. They even confirmed it by tweeting.
If you switch to Cloudflare’s 220.127.116.11 DNS, then the problem should go away. 18.104.22.168 DNS is fastest and secure DNS. DuckDuckGo also recommends using 22.214.171.124 DNS. If you don’t know how to change DNS click here. Or if you want, you can even download it’s app available on both App Store and Play Store.
Tor Browser, the most secure browser also tweeted regarding this matter:
Airtel and Jio are two of the ISPs that have blocked the search engine. We don’t know why they are blocking it, either it is a mistake or they have done it on purpose. If you also see message that the site has been blocked as per the orders by DoT then please take screenshot and report on IFF’s website (Internet Freedom Foundation).
Here is a tweet from a user reporting the problem:
If you haven’t try DuckDuckGo, then I highly recommend to try it. As mentioned above you can change DNS and use it without any problem. I also recommend 126.96.36.199 DNS which is my favorite DNS among all other DNS’s. Combination of 188.8.131.52 and DuckDuckGo is great as both are privacy based services and will keep your data safe from others.
Let’s see if ISPs allow usage of DuckDuckGo or not.
